Description: *
Black Pu-erh Tuo Cha Tea. This Tuo Cha is a black Pu-erh pressed into small cakes shaped like bowls or "birds nests". It has a mellow flavor with some of the classic Pu-erh earthiness. Expected to improve further in flavor in 2-3 years. Each bowl is good for 2-4 cups of tea and 3 plus infusions.
Pu-erh is a form of tea pressed into cakes, bricks or other shapes. It is oxidized slowly, through an aging process, that is thought to bring out a deeper, more varied flavor from the tea. It is the only tea that improves in flavor and value with age.
Recommended storage for this tea is a breathable (non-airtight) container away from odors under normal household conditions (relatively low humidity, moderately warm). A clay pot is an ideal vessel. Tea should be aged in this manner for 2-3 years or more. With black Pu-erh, the benefit from aging is subtle and too much oxidation can damage the tea. Recommend sampling periodically and sealing in an airtight container to stop the oxidation process once the tea reaches maturity.
The basic brewing method for this tea is to crumble a bowl in a teapot. Heat water until boiling. Steep for 1-3 minutes or to taste. Use 1 bowl for 2-4 6 oz cups.
The Gongfu brewing method for this tea is to crumble a bowl in a teapot. Heat water until boiling. Steep for 15 seconds and pour off water. This is called rinsing the tea. Add more water and steep for 15 seconds. Pour water incrementally into teacups or a secondary teapot. Water at the bottom of the pot will be stronger. Additional infusions should be steeped for longer, 15 secs for the second infusion, 30 secs for the third, 60 secs, 120 secs, etc until tea is depleted. Steep longer for a stronger taste.
An alternate brewing method that is popular is to place 2 or more crumbled bowls in the bottom of a thermos. Add hot water and pour cups all day. Replace with additional hot water to dilute. Can brew for extended periods without becoming astringent.

"This was a great tea. I like the portability of the cakes and the bold taste is a good transition for coffee drinkers."

"I have never been a coffee drinker. For those trying to replace coffee this might be your tea. Strong earthly/musty taste. Glad I tried it though!"

"I really like this tea. It has a rich earthy taste. It's not bitter and I find the flavor is best enhanced by "rinsing the tea first and then enjoying multiple infusions. I highly recommend this tea as a good first pu-erh tea."

Absolutely wonderful...a "fine wine" of tea

"I was a little apprehensive about trying this tea, as there are so many warnings about the earthy, sometimes musty taste of Pu-erh, but I wanted to try it at least, for the experience more than anything. Little did I know that my experiment would plunge me into a new level of appreciation for this “fine wine” of the tea world. The first infusion was very dark, even after only 1 minute, and smelled like a very strong Yunnan tea, very malty. I let the 2nd infusion steep the full three minutes, and strained it into my cup, noting the breathtaking deep red color when held up to the light. This tea is very dark, and seems like it would be strong, but the first sip is absolutely heavenly. The taste is very earthy, with a malty undertone like a strongly brewed Assam. It is amazingly smooth on the tongue, and leaves an incredible aftertaste in the mouth that is almost sweet. The texture is thicker than most teas, a pleasant feeling against the palate. The 2nd infusion was definitely my favorite, though I may try the 1st infusion as well next time.
The 3rd and fourth infusions were understandably lighter, but still brewed to a golden reddish brown the color of a “normal” cup of tea. The taste was still superb, the texture still sublime, and every sip left me relaxed and peaceful, with a very pleasant aftertaste. This is truly the Cadillac of tea for me, and an absolute necessity in my kitchen from now on. "

"This tea gives an impressive presentation. It's a conversation starter. Looks very nice in tea gift baskets. It has an unusual taste that is a bit strong. I bring it out for special occasions. Remember to use a strainer or an infusion ball because the wrapping falls away and the tea is loose in the pot. One small bird's nest of this tea makes a large strong pot of tea. If you like to try new things, try this one, it's a delight."
