Description: *
Lapsang Souchong (Organic) Tea. An unusual, smoked Chinese black tea with a strong aroma and taste reminiscent of a campfire.
To create this tea, the leaves are dried and withered over fires of pine wood before being pan-fried and rolled. They are then pressed into wooden barrels and covered with cloth to oxidize the leaves. After another round of pan-frying, they are rolled into taut strips. As a final step, they are placed in bamboo baskets and hung on racks over a pine fire to finish drying and absorb the smoky flavor. The end result is thick, glossy leaves in black strips.
Produces a dark red cup with a smoky-pine aroma.
Legend:
Legend has it that this tea was discovered by accident. In the Qing dynasty, a unit of the army was passing through Xingcun, Star Village, and camped in a tea factory full of freshly picked tea leaves.
When the soldiers left, the workers returned to find little time left to process the leaves and get them to market. In desperation, they lit fires out of pine to hasten the drying. When they reached the market, the tea with its unique pine flavor was a hit. It has been produced ever since.
Basic brewing method:
Use 1 heaping teaspoon per 6 oz cup. Heat water
until boiling. Steep for 3-4 minutes. Try with
sugar.

"I am completely new to lapsang, and it was quite surprising to try it. The smell is smoky and intense, and the aftertaste lingers on your palate 30 minutes after finishing the tea. I am contemplating buying a new teapot just for this tea: the smell permeates other infusions "

"Great tea. You can taste a little bit of a caramelized sweetness along with the smokiness. The tea is very high quality to begin with and makes for a wonderful drink."

"This tea has a wonderful and unique taste. Very few people around the office I work in enjoy this tea and they are put off by the interesting flavor but I love it! This organic lapsang is very good compared to some of the bagged versions I've previously bought."

"I was initially put off by the strong smoky smell - it reminded me of my fireplace - but once I brewed it I was won over. It's still smoky but not overwhelming and it's a bit sweet. I drink it black but it would probably be nice with a touch of milk. "

"This tea's taste is worth trying, but the smell is quite strong and can be distastful to some. It certainly wouldn't be tea I'd drink on a regular basis. So if you're in a well ventillated area or outside on a cool autumn day, give this one a try!"

"The tea itself has a lovely flavor that is complimented by the pine smoke. It's good on a cold day, excellent with a little milk or cream, but not necessarily something everyone will enjoy. Personally, it's the one tea I like to always have around."

"This tea has a flavour like no other. The smokey aroma is just as strong after brewing as it is when its dry. If its not kept in an air tight container it will lend it flavour to any tea next to it so be careful.
On another note, I was in a chinese hot pot restaurant and they served this tea iced with and very sweet with prune juice or something, interesting."
