***** Very Good Quality 12/31/2009 06:44
"I'm no expert in this flower, but I've tried Hibiscus from another place and it was just ok but the organic Hibiscus from dragonwater is in my opinon very good quality. Dragonwater's organic Hibiscus is a bit more tart and had more flavor than the other brand and it's nicly cut and shifted without much small particles."

"Got my shipment today and couldn't wait to get my 1st brew. It was absolutely fantastic!! I had to use a tablespoon. I'll be taking this to work everyday! Great tea! Looking forward to ordering more and other flavors too!"

***** simply the best 11/08/2009 17:15
"I personally love this tea! I steep it for about 10 to 15 minutes in a tea ball with boiling hot water. I love the burgandy color of this tea. I always have 1 cup ever evening after dinner. It has helped with my blood pressure. I have reconmended this tea to several of my friends who have problems with their blood pressure. To sweeten it, just use your favorite sweetner. It does have a nice tang to it!"

***** Great w/ a light hand 07/10/2009 21:11
"I received this as a sample and tried it first on it's own w/ a heaping teaspoon. It was unexpectedly very tart but not unpleasant. I now mix it w/ other teas, making it more punch like than too tart. I only use about 1/4 of teaspoon. I will definitely be purchasing this soon. "

***** Not for me 05/22/2009 15:46
"I received this as a free sample and thought I would give it a shot, and found that I'm not a fan of Hibiscus. It's too "tangy," and the red color is a little off putting to me. I hate to say I couldn't finish it! I might try mixing it in small amounts with something else, but probably won't try it by itself again."

***** This is the one for me! 05/09/2009 18:10
"First time ordering from Dragonwater and this tea is the best. Yes, it has a tangy flavor but it is so refreshing! If it truly has the health benefits, then I am sold. "

"This is the best tea I have ever had! It is good hot but AWESOME iced!! I gave each of my daughters a glass of iced and I have them hooked on it now! I put a little natural sweetener in it. The first time I made it iced I drank a whole quart in one afternoon. This will definitely be the tea of choice this summer."

***** Beautiful color, pleasant flavor 10/21/2008 10:12
"I like to add a little bit of hibiscus to other teas. It adds a nice fruity note as well as a beautiful red color and delicious fragrance. In Jamaica, local people steep hibiscus in red wine to make a special Christmas drink. Lovely."

***** Just like in Egypt! 07/21/2008 14:27
"I had hibiscus tea in Egypt for the first time--every place we went we were offered delicious cups of this hot, tart tea. When we returned home I looked for ages before I found Dragonwater's version, which is 100% hibiscus flowers, just like they served us there. (Before that I purchased bagged teas with various additions that weren't anything like what I was craving.) It is really tart, so be ready for that! "

***** Great recipe! 05/16/2008 15:21
"In San Antonio, Texas, a beautiful city with 68% people of Spanish origin, almost every restaurant serves Hibiscus tea, combining a hibiscus (jamaica) with peppermint leaves. "Karkade" is actually served in some restaurants combining Hibiscus, Mint, Ginger root, and White grape juice.... DELICIOUS! I keep it in my frig. Play with the amount of ingredients. No need to add sugar with the white grape juice. Kiddos LOVE it as an alternative to sweet drinks, and its very good for you. "

***** Beautiful & Soothing 03/31/2008 06:32
"This tea has quickly become one of my favorites; it's refreshing, has wonderful flavor and mouth feel, and it soothes me in the mid-afternoon when I am at my most stressed point in the day. I went out on a limb purchasing this tea and was happily rewarded; many thanks to DragonWater for allowing it's patrons to post reviews, otherwise I may not have tried this amazing tea."

***** I like it with other herbs 02/15/2008 20:05
"My favorite thing to do is to brew a pinch of hibiscus with a pinch of chamomile or a pinch of spearmint before bed. Nice and relaxing, I do like tart flavors--one reason I like this tea. "

***** no subject 12/25/2007 17:49
"I wasn't expecting such a tart taste when I took my first sip. Next time I will cut the amount of tea in half and steep it for less time. Tough to drink without sugar!
[Edit: I have been drinking this tea for about a month now and it has really grown on me. So much so that I have changed my rating from 3 to 5 stars. If you're put off by the sour taste at first, experiment with different amounts of leaves, sugar, and steeping time. Don't give up on it right away!] "

Classification

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Division: Magnoliophyta
  • Class: Magnoliopsida
  • Order: Malvales
  • Family: Malvaceae
  • Genus: Hibscus
  • Species: Hibiscus sabdariffa (and ~200 other species)

    Description

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also known as roselle, is a flowering shrub in the plant family of Malvaceae and is the commonly used species of hibiscus for tea. The calyces (or calyxes) are used which are the outer portion of the flower bud. The calyces are often referred to as hibiscus flowers in recipes and tea blends.

    Traditional usage

This list reflects the "traditional usage" of hibiscus, which should be considered folklore unless supported by a scientific study. Studies, where available, are quoted and referenced. See the Disclaimer below.

  • Cholesterol / Heart Disease - a study at the Chung Shan University in Taiwan involving rats on high cholesterol diets demonstrated that an extract of the hibiscus flower significantly lowered cholesterol content in blood serum and prevented oxidation of LDL, "bad", cholesterol.

"Experiments have shown that compounds extracted from red wine and tea reduce cholesterol and lipid build-up in the arteries of rats.

"This is the first study to show that Hibiscus extract has the same effect."

    - Dr. Chau-Jong Wang, lead researcher

  • Hypertension - in one study individuals with hypertension were given hibiscus tea once daily for 12 days. Members of the control group lowered their blood pressure by 11% versus 4% for the control group.

  • Liver Disorder - hibiscus is thought to help with liver disorders, though no studies to this effect have been done.

    Side effects

No studies on the side effects of hibiscus usage have been reviewed.

    Tea blends

Hibscus flowers can be used alone as a tea or blended with other herbals. Common blends include:

  • Hibiscus/Rose Hips - these herbs are often combined.

Note: the above combinations of herbs and their effects should be considered "folklore" and are not based on clinical studies. See the Disclaimer below.
