"This is SO much better than coffee! I have never been able to get past that bitter coffee taste, so I decided to try some of this. I was very pleased - it was sweet and smoky, and a little bit peppery. It reminds me a little bit of green tea, but not overtly so. This is definitely going on my reorder list."

All-time favorite

"Mate is amazing! My all time favorite pick-me-up is a blend of green yerba mate, roasted yerba mate and some stevia leaf for sweetness. This blows coffe out of the water. It's a better, "cleaner" energy AND it's very healthy!"

Something different

"I was expecting a more intense flavor, but this was not the case. Instead, the Mate has more subtle flavors like mint and smoke. I don't agree with other reviewers that its flavor resembles a green tea. It has a unique "green" flavor - mate."

"The first few times I tried this I did not like it due to my brewing methods. I enjoy this iced (as most teas I like) and with sugar and honey. The colder the better for this one. I hated it warm. It will grow on you the more you drink it."

The Best.....

"I love THIS Mate! I've tried Green Yerbe Mate from a few different popular web-sites, and THIS mate is by far the sweetest, freshest, "green" tasting mate. I usually don't refer to Mate as sweet, but this one is. It's never bitter, and it mixes well with soooo many other herbs/teas. I drink this every morning and whenever I need an extra zing. I never get the jitters, and I can always go to sleep when I need to. I LOVE IT - this mate pairs perfectly with the green rooibos, for an extremely healthy cup!!! "

Worth the Try

"I did not find this to be bitter in the least. Its surprisingly complex in fact. There's a smokey hickory-like quality to it, minty and sweet all at the same time. I enjoyed this completely without adding anything prepared as described on the packaging. A very refreshing herbal tea, although maybe not for everyone."

Best when sweetened

"It is extremely bitter but, when sufficiently sweetened, it has a delightfully peppery taste. It has an aftertaste reminiscent of mint. This tea may be challenging to some drinkers because of its high levels of caffeine and unusual flavours."

"I expected to get the jitters from this tea since the caffeine content is high, but that was not the case. This tea has a mild slight sweet grassy flavor and blends well with herbal teas. I like to make my own supercharged tisane concoctions with it!"

My first mate
|

|
|
"My first try at Yerba Mate. Not as intense as I thought it would be from the reviews, however I am also not very responsive to stimulants such as caffeine, so if it's the kick you're looking for, my opinion may be moot in that regard. I do like the taste and smell, and drink it every morning before work for the kick it does offer. Definitely a nice alternative to regular tea."

"this mate took me a few cups before i appreciated it. for one thing it's green which was new to me, and i wasn't expecting it to be sweet. however, after several cups I would not describe it as sweet, but flavorful. my previous experience with mate led me to believe it to be bland. in terms of caffeine, it definetley rivals coffee, but without the coffee jitters."

Excellent alternative to morning coffee
|

"Living in FLorida, some mornings start out 80+ degrees and a cup of hot coffee with cream & sugar is just too heavy and rich. I tried Yerba for the first time this morning, and I am very happy with the taste, color and my new choice for a light, subtle cup of "wake me up" that doesn't require lots of sweetened creamer. Thanks, Dragonwater!"

Additional information:
Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a
shrub native to South America that is a popular
caffeinated tea.
Classification

Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Aquifoliales
Family: Aquifolicaceae
Genus: Ilex
Species: Paraguariensis
Binomial name: Ilex paraguariensis (S.H.)
Description

Yerba Mate has a long, deep cultural history in
Latin America with the first known usage of the
herb attributed to the Guarani Indians. The
Guarani called this evergreen shrub the Caa bush
and reveered the tea made from its leaves as
the "drink of the gods". When the Spanish
encountered the Guarani in the early 1500's, they
found a strong, healthy and good-natured people
who attributed their success to the Caa bush.
Also known as the Jesuit Tea or Missionary Tea,
the drink soon became popular among the Spanish
and was dubbed, Yerba Mate or Ilex Paraguariensis
(S.H.). In 1628, Jesuit priest Nicaolas del Techo
wrote:
"Too many virtues are attributed to the herb. It
acts as a soporific at the same time as it
stimulates; calms the appetite at the same time
it aids digestion. It restores strength, brings
happiness, and cures many diseases. All I see is
that those who develop the habit can't seem to
get along without it."
The Spanish would soon try to curtail consumption
of the drink. Suspicous of its "magical powers",
they would declare it demonic and threaten
excommunication to anyone who drank it. But it
was a futile effort and they soon reversed
themselves and integrated the herb into the
church.
Today, Yerba Mate is highly popular drink in
South America, Europe, and the Middle East, but
is relatively unknown in the US.
The traditional ceremony around mate involves the
use of a hollowed out gourd and a bombilla.
Whenever guests are over, the host will take a
gourd, put some roasted mate leaves in the
bottom, and add hot water. The tea is then drank
through a bombilla which is a straw, usually made
of silver, with a strainer on the end to keep the
leaves in the gourd. The host drinks the gourd
completely and then refills and passes it on to
the next person in the "mate circle", who drinks
his gourd until it is gone. The process is
repeated until everyone has had a gourd of mate.
This is a ceremony shared by both the peasant and
the aristocrat, across many cultures.
Yerba Mate is rich in vitamins, minerals and
antioxidants and contains three separate
chemicals in the caffeine family.
